That holds in every country including mainland China. The Wi-Fi version (A3595) has no cellular connection, so it takes no SIM of any kind. This is Apple’s 2026 model and the eighth iPad mini, which is why many people call it the iPad mini 8.

The short answer

For travel, the Wi-Fi + Cellular model (A3596, or A3597 in mainland China) is the better buy. It is the only version that takes an eSIM and the only one with GPS. Its connection carries data only, so a data-only travel eSIM takes nothing away from it. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you arrive. If you set out from mainland China with an A3597, install it after you leave.

What Apple announced on 26 October

Apple announced the iPad mini (A20 Pro) on 26 October 2026, took pre-orders from 28 October and sells it from 6 November. It has an 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro chip, an IP67 rating against water and dust, and 128, 256 or 512 GB of storage. In the US it starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, so cellular costs $150 more.

Is my phone eSIM compatible?

Your phone needs eSIM support and no carrier lock before it can use Atli. The model name alone is not always enough because Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers sell regional versions with different SIM features. Check the phone itself, then confirm its lock status with the carrier that sold it.

The short answer

Dial
*#06#
. If the information screen includes an EID, the phone has eSIM hardware. If no EID appears, search Settings for “Add eSIM” or “Download SIM.” You must also confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone can have eSIM hardware and still reject a travel eSIM because it is locked to one operator.

Check for an EID or an Add eSIM menu

You can message Atli in WhatsApp or Telegram to ask about a specific model. Because two phones with the same model name can have different regional hardware, checking for an EID on the device itself is the final confirmation of eSIM hardware.
