How to plan it

The slow boat down the Mekong takes two days on a long wooden boat between Huay Xai, on the Thai border, and Luang Prabang. The banks are forest and small villages, with water buffalo in the shallows, and there is little to do on board but watch them. The trip needs a night in Pakbeng, a riverside village halfway along.

The short answer

Do it, and buy the ticket at the Huay Xai boat landing on the morning you sail, 300,000 to 500,000 kip depending on season and where you buy, cheapest at the pier office. Day one leaves late morning and reaches Pakbeng by evening; day two leaves at 9.30am and arrives above Luang Prabang mid-to-late afternoon. Book the Pakbeng bed before you board. Skip the speedboat entirely, and go between October and February when the river is full and the hills are green.

How the two days run

Boarding at Huay Xai starts around 9.30am and the boat pulls out between 11 and 11.30, arriving in Pakbeng around six as the light goes orange. The second day starts earlier: away at 9.30, into Luang Prabang between 3.30 and 5.30 depending on the current. Seats are old van seats and unassigned, so board early for a good one; the back of the boat is next to the engine and loud.

eSIM for Laos in 2026: which plan do you need?

The Laos-China Railway has transformed travel between Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang, but buying tickets and checking seat assignments requires the official LCR app. Outside the train stations, finding guesthouses down unpaved side alleys still relies on having a map handy.

Atli is data-only. It does not provide a Lao phone number, SMS or cellular voice calls. Maps, WhatsApp, the railway booking app and translation apps all work through the data connection.

Things to do in Luang Prabang (and how to do them right)

Luang Prabang sits on a narrow peninsula where the Nam Khan river meets the Mekong, a former royal capital of gold-roofed temples and French shophouses that has been UNESCO listed since 1995. The list of things to do in Luang Prabang is genuinely short, and that is not a criticism. This is a town that closes before midnight and asks you to slow down to its speed. The travelers who fight that have a bad time. The ones who give in tend to stay longer than they booked.
